Updated! Numbers of Papers from Six Big 10 Mathematics Departments, 1990-2007
The following is an updated version of the chart from earlier this week. Here we have added the MathSciNet category of Complex Variables, and we've merged all of Topology into one category. In the previous chart, "General Topology" was not the best category for the current work being done by the department.

[Data from MathSciNet, chart created by Khaled Noubani, 5/25/07] We recently took a cue from Linda Yamamoto (Stanford) comparing math output from various universities. These five were compared with Indiana- the selection of which Big 10 schools to include was somewhat random...we tried to look at departments of similar size.
IU leads the pack in General Topology, Partial Differential Equations, and Summability Theory for the past 17 years ...not so many papers from IU on K-Theory or Number Theory. We also seem to be publishing quite a bit in Statistical Mechanics, and Probability, second only to Wisconsin for both subject areas.
